He was a soldier in the Civil War, enlisting in 1862; served fourteen months, and was discharged by reason of an injury received at the Battle of Prairie Grove, Arkansas. He graduated from the Bennett Medical College and commenced practice as a physician, in Lake Mills, Iowa. He was elected to the State Legislature in 1879. He was a member of the Iowa State Board of Health. About 1885 he moved to Milton, Wisconsin. He died suddenly at Madison, Wisconsin, April 11, 1889 (Severance, B. Frank. Genealogy and biography of the descendants of Walter Stewart of Scotland and of John Stewart who came to America in 1718 and settled in Londonderry, N.H. Greenfield, Mass. : T. Morey & Son, 1905, pg. 69, 133).

Enlisted February 13, 1862 in Co. L 3rd Wisconsin Cavalry Regiment. Discharged in Springfield, MO, no date listed.

In Madison, Wis., April 9, 1889, Justin M. Hull, M. D., aged 43 years and 10 months. The deceased was the son of the late Eld. O. P. Hull. He enlisted in the war of the rebellion when a little past 17 years of age, was a member of Co. L, 3d Wisconsin Volunteer Cavalry. He had been a member of the Legislature of the State of Iowa. He was twice appointed by the Governors of Iowa a member of the State Board of Health. His remains were brought to Milton and interred April 12th; the pastor of the Milton Church officiating, assisted by Rev. Dr. Wardner. He leaves a widow, a son and daughter, who deeply mourn his decease.
