The book "Londonderry Stewarts - Genealogy of" claims that the father of John Stewart, born 9/12/1745 was named Samuel. However Philip Stewart, 6 Saball Ct., Sewall's Pt., Stuart, Florida stated to me in a phone conversation that this was incorrect and that his name was James. Philip indicated that James' wife Alice married James' brother Samuel after James died, so this may be the source of confusion. History & genealogy of the Hubbell family. 3rd ed. Compiled & edited by Harold Berresford Hubbell, Jr. & Donald Sidney Hubbell. 1980. Brooklyn, NY : Theo. Gaus, Ltd. also has John's father as Samuel (pg. 92).
Severance also has Samuel as John's father, with no record of James other than his being a son of John, perhaps based upon John's will. To deal with the confusion, I have listed James as the father of John, and Samuel as the father of the other children, as detailed in Severance. (Severance, B. Frank. Genealogy and biography of the descendants of Walter Stewart of Scotland and of John Stewart who came to America in 1718 and settled in Londonderry, N.H. Greenfield, Mass. : T. Morey & Son, 1905, pg. 92).
