The question of Adela and her parentage is a confusing one. Browning, pg. 117 lists her as the daughter of Otto I and his second wife Adelheid. On page 503 he lists her as the daughter of Rollo the Dane (here he calls her Gerloc, but I have found an Internet site which calls her "Adele or Gerloc" (SS Hypertree site). On yet another site I saw an indication that William III, Duke of Aquitaine, married twice, to: 1- Adelheid of Adele (917-962) and Adele or Gerloc de Normandy (abt 897-1/14/962). This site claims that the Adela who married Hugh Capet (Adela de Poitou) was the daughter of the first Adele (917-962). If this information were taken in conjunction with the conflicting claims in Browning, we would have to accept that Hugh Capet married two women named Adele (Adela) who were both the daughters of William III. I find no reference to Hugh having married twice, and the inference seems improbable. The question then turns to the parentage of the Adela who married William III and was the mother of the Adele who married Hugh Capet. The Internet sites I searched list her as being born in 917. Otto I was born in 912, so he could not have been her father. Since Rollo was born in 870, he could certainly have been her father. Even if the Adele in question was the "Gerloc" born about 897, Rollo could well have been the father, but Otto I obviously could not have been. "Debrett's kings and queens of Europe, pg. 66 lists Hugh Capet's mother-in-law as "Adela of Normandy" lending further credence to the claim that she was Rollo's daughter, since he was Duke of Normandy.
