Maurice "Morey" Graves Emery, 97, was born June 2, 1916, in Silver Lake, Ore., and passed away Feb. 16, 2014, at Hospice House in Bend, Ore. His parents were Everett "Slivers" A. Emery and Esther Graves Emery Franks, both members of early day Lake County, Ore., families.
Maurice, the eldest of three boys, spent his early life at the family ranch at Silver Lake. After graduating high school, he attended Adcox School in Portland, Ore., and later the Oregon Institute of Technology, taking classes in welding, automotive, and aircraft structure.
In 1941, he went to work for the Budd Manufacturing Co. in Philadelphia, Pa. There he met Vivian Smith, and they were married on Sept. 17, 1942. They adopted a daughter, Beryll Lea, in December 1949. Shortly after, Maurice took a job at Douglas Aircraft Co. in Torrance, Calif. Around 1960, he retired from the aircraft industry, and he and his family moved to Corning, Calif., where he worked in construction. He was active in the Corning Chamber of Commerce, a city councilman for many years, a lifelong member of the Masonic Lodge and a Shriner.
After Vivian's death in 1980, he bought a travel trailer and toured the entire country. In 1993, he married Mary Lou Grade. They made their home in Wickenburg, Ariz., from 1995 until they moved to Klamath Falls in 2009.
He was predeceased by his parents; brothers, Dale and Kenneth Emery; his two wives; and his daughter.
He is survived by two nieces, Zelda Emery Monical of Montague, Calif., and Cherri Emery Faust of Burney, Calif.; a nephew, Bruce Emery and his wife, Penny and their two sons, Kyle and Trent Emery of Silver Lake; and a special friend, Maggie Jeans of Bend. He also leaves numerous cousins.
A memorial service will be planned at a later date.
