"Founder of Hunter Store is Dead at 79," Syracuse Herald, Monday, July 24, 1933, p. 6 accessed August 16, 2019: Detroit, Jul 24.--Thomas Hunter, 79, owner of Hunter Inc., Syracuse department store and former owner of department stores in Utica and in Detroit, Michigan, is dead today at his home here. || Two sons, John G. Hunter of Syracuse, and Edward A. of Ann Arbor, Mich., and his wife, Mrs. Louise Worden Hunter, survive. A third son, T. Worden Hunter, nationally famed amateur golfer, was killed in an airplane crash at Roosevelt Field in April 1930. || Mr. Hunter came to the United States with his parents from Portrush, [County Antrim] Ireland when 12. The family settled at Utica, where he made his start in business. Mr. Hunter came to Detroit 40 years ago and opened a department store known as Hunter & Hunter. This store burned 20 years ago and he retired from business to devote his time to management of his real estate holdings. || An ardent golfer and fisherman, Mr. Hunter had not missed an annual trip to the Restigouche River, New Brunswick, for salmon fishing in 40 years. -------- Thomas Hunter, although he made frequent visits to this city to look after the affairs of the department store in which he owned a controlling interest to the time of his death, never lived in Syracuse. He was in the city last in May. It was said at the store he had not been well for two months. He was chairman of the board of the store company. || Mr. Hunter entered the Syracuse business field of Syracuse in 1906 by purchasing the store of D. McCarthy & Sons. His son, Edward A. Hunter, who lives in Ann Arbor, Mich., is present of the Syracuse company. || It is expected that E. F. Vogel, treasurer of the company, and possibly other executives of the store, will go to Detroit for the funeral.

Syracuse department store, who died Monday at his home, 2906 Jefferson Avenue, after 10 days' illness, were conducted her this afternoon. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery. -------- Thomas Hunter was a former resident of Utica and a member of the dry goods firm of A.S.&T. Hunter there for many years. In 1906 he purchased the D. McCarthy & Sons store in Syracuse and with Charles F. Tuppen, forming Hunter, Tuppen & Co. When Mr. Tuppen resigned in 1923, the name was changed to Hunters, Inc. Edward A. Hunter, a son, is president. || Mr. Hunter is survived by his wife, Louise Worden Hunter; two sons, John G. Hunter of Syracuse and Edward A. Hunter of Ann Arbor, Mich. A third son, T.
