He and brother Spencer headed to California during the Gold Rush in 1848, but were turned back by a Cholera outbreak in Texas. Augustus worked many years for the Bank of the State of New York and First National Bank of New Orleans. In 1881 he established the Electrician, a magazine devoted to electrical industries. The magazine, a success, was later expanded under the title of Electrician and Electrical Engineer.
Augustus died of Apoplexy at his home in Whitestone, in 1892.
