Joseph Sanford Doughty, 87, of Lexington, died Thursday, August 7, 1997, at the Stonewall Jackson Hospital. He was born April 23, 1910 in Williamstown, Mass., a son of William Howard Doughty Jr. and Lydia Sanford Vail Doughty.

Mr. Doughty was retired from Washington and Lee University as Assistant Director of Development. He served on the board of Historic Lexington Foundation, was an active member of the Williams College Alumni Association, and was a member and elder of the Lexington Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Cynthia Cleveland Doughty; two sons, Geoffrey Hart Doughty, Lyman, Maine, Philip Sanford Doughty, Catania, Sicily; one stepson, Paul Cleveland Fairbank, Chicago, Ill.; two stepdaughters, Cynthia Spring Fairbank, New York City, N.Y., Linda Fairbank Nesbitt, San Diego, Calif.; one sister, Mrs. Robert L. Debevoise, Williamstown, Mass.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted 4 p.m. Monday, August 11, 1997, at Stonewall Jackson Memorial Cemetery, Lexington, with the Rev. Dr. William M. Klein and the Rev. D. Holmes Irving officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Doughty Memorial Scholarship Fund or the Alumni Fund at Williams College, Williamstown, Mass., or the Historic Lexington Foundations. Arrangements are being handled by Williams Funeral Service, Lexington.
