Norridgewock - Charles J. Carpenter Sr., 78, of Norridgewock passed away Thursday, May 25, 2006, at Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan.
He was born Nov. 28, 1927, in Skowhegan, the son of Miles F. Carpenter Sr. and Edith Young Carpenter.
He grew up in Skowhegan, graduated from Skowhegan High School in the class of 1946 and joined the army immediately after graduation.
In the 1st Calvary Division, he was sent to Japan with the Occupational forces for two years.
On his return he entered the Miles F. Carptenter Insurance Agency.
He married Gloria Franklin on June 25, 1950.
Charles was the president of the insurance agency for many years, retiring with more than 40 years of service at the agency.
Charles wore many hats. As well as an insurance agent, he was a Somerset County Commissioner for more than 30 years serving as chairman for many of those years. He was the agricultural superintendent of the Skowhegan State Fair, acting as president of the fair for one term and served on the board of directors. In the Town of Norridgewock he served as selectman for five years and served on the planning board. He also was an active member of the Polled Hereford Association.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Gloria, of Norridgwewock; one son, one daughter, one brother, one sister, three grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and many dear friends (names omitted for privacy).
There will be no public visiting hours or funeral services held.
