Mary E. Franklin, 102, died July 31, 2011 at an Ellsworth healthcare facility. She was born April 14, 1910 the daughter of Loring L. and Menia (Brown) Franklin.
She was educated in the Ellsworth School System, graduated from Farmington State Normal School, and received her B.S. in Education from the University of Maine in Orono and a degree in Education from the Hillyer College of the University of Hartford in West Hartford, CT. She was involved in elementary education for 42 years, having taught in most of the schools of Winsted, CT for 35 years and in Ellsworth junior high level for 7 years. Mary attended the First Congregational Church and supported many of their activities. She was a regular donor to many worthwhile organizations. She was a member of both the Maine and CT. Retired Teachers Association, and at one time was a member of the Theta Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma Society. After retiring from teaching, she was employed by the Ellsworth American for several years doing proof reading and writing the 25-50 years ago columns. Mary liked doing handwork, especially crocheting and wood working. She was fond of most sports and was an avid golfer and bowler and enjoyed watching baseball and football games especially.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by 2 sisters Nina F. Berry and Margaret B. Franklin: 3 brothers Dalton J. Sr, Leamon P. and Donald L. Franklin.
