Uriah Morehouse Gregory was the son of Ensign Joseph Gregory and his wife Mary Morehouse. He married Lucretia Ely, daughter of Col John Ely M.D and his wife Sarah Worthington.

At age 19, Uriah owned a store with with his brothers in Washington Twp and Dover Plains, N.Y. He studied medicine under Dr. Simeon Smith, uncle of Lucretia Ely. Uriah set up practice in Dover Plains, Catskill. It is believed that he was the first doctor in Sand Lake, NY. Later he became a post master (again 1st in Sand Lake, NY), School director, mason, abolitionist and member of an Anti Slavery society ( he also was said to have run a station of the Underground Railway). He was a member of Temperance society in Sand Lake, NY, as well as worked on starting up an Agricultural Society in Rennselaer, NY.

Fun fact: one of Uriah's letters to Thomas Jefferson has been preserved and Thomas Jeffersons reply can be accessed online.

Over the years he and Lucretia had ten children together. Many of them settled in Ohio and Michigan as adults. After the passing of his wife, Uriah moved and resided in Cleveland, Ohio several years there. Toward the end of his life he moved to Howell, Michigan and farmed. He was laid to rest at Lakeview Cemetery where his son Edward E. Gregory and his family were later interned.

Although Uriah was not brought up wealthy, he was able to provide his children comfort and refinement, give his children a good education, and send several of his children to college. Uriah was said to be a man of staunch integrity and uprightness.
