NEW YORK CITY, AND NORTHEAST HARBOR - Samuel P. Peabody, 92, died peacefully on Wednesday, May 3rd, 2017 in New York City. He was born February 21, 1925, in Chestnut Hill, Pennsylvania, the son of The Right Reverend Malcolm E. Peabody and Mary Parkman Peabody.
Sam graduated from the Brooks school and after being discharged from the U.S Army in 1945 he attended Harvard College graduating in 1950, then Teachers College at Columbia University where he did his graduate studies. Later, he was a teacher at the St. Bernard's School in New York as well as The Rye Country Day School in Rye, New York, where he served as Head of the Middle School. He was a consummate advocate for children and families. Sam was on the Board of Reality House, Antioch University, Citizens' Committee for Children of New York, Broad Jump, and Prep for Prep. He was also on the Vestry of St. James Church in Manhattan.
He loved his life, his family and his friends. He could never get over how lucky he had been. Sam loved Maine, climbing the mountains of Mt. Desert Island, and was an avid squash player. He enjoyed traveling and was a unique story teller. He will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him.
Sam is survived by his loving daughter, Elizabeth Peabody, his brother Malcolm Peabody Jr., and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his adoring wife, Judy, his sister Marietta Tree, his brother Endicott "Chub" Peabody and his brother George Peabody.
A funeral service was held on May 13th at St. James Church, 865 Madison Avenue in New York City. Graveside service will be held 4:00 p.m. Monday, July 31, 2017, at Forest Hill Cemetery, Northeast Harbor, with a reception to follow at Asticou Inn, Northeast Harbor.
