Dr. Charles Bulkeley, eldest surviving son of Dr. and Rev. Gershom Bulkeley and Sarah Chauncey, b. circa 1663 probably in New London, Conn. He d. in New London before Mar. 13, 1692/3, the date his widow m. 2) in Wethersfield, Conn. (by John Chester, JP) Thomas Avery, both of New London. No vital record exists to state when Charles actually died, and due to the loss of pre-1700 probate records for the New London Probate District, no probate of his estate survives. In Donald Lines Jacobus' 1933 published The Bulkeley Family (p. 136), Jacobus claimed Charles died in New London in 1692 and provided the following detail:
• He was licensed to practice physics and chirurgery, Oct. 1687 [Colonial Records.] Receipt dated New London, Mar. 20, 1695 [i.e., 1694/5], of Thomas Avery who married the widow Charles "Bulkely." Also receipt, June 4, 1695, of Hannah "Avrey" of New London "to my uncle Nehemiah Smith, Administrator of the estate of my former husband Charles Buckly"; mentions money left in her hands for her daughter Hannah "Buckly", who is referred to as the only child.[1]
On an unrecorded date, Dr. Charles Bulkeley m. Hannah Raymond, dau. of Capt. Joshua Raymond and Elizabeth Smith (dau. of Nehemiah), b. Aug. 8, 1668 of record in New London, Conn. By this marriage was born one child:
• i. Hannah Bulkeley, b. on or after Sept. 24, 1691 in New London, bapt. Apr. 17, 1692 (New London First Cong. Ch. Rec.), and d. Sept. 23, 1721 in Glastonbury, Conn., Æ 30 (g.s.); m. [1] Jacobus provided no source for these receipts. The writer assumes they perhaps are in either the New London town or New London land records.
