Dr. Larry Stephen Meadows Sr. of Lexington, formerly of Carrollton, Ky., died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009, at his residence.
He was a 1961 graduate of Carroll County High School in Carrollton, Ky., where he was a member of the marching band. He served in the Army from 1961 to 1964 and in the Kentucky Army National Guard from 1978 to 1981 as an aide to the state adjutant general. He was honored in 1979 as Kentucky Soldier of the Year. He also served as a member of the Air Guard Military Police with the Alaska Air National Guard from 1985 to 1987. He was an acupuncturist and a former senior trooper for the Kentucky State Police, as well as a former city administrator in the cities of Barrow, Aniak, Thorne Bay, Mount Village and Fairbanks, Alaska. He owned and operated the Meadows Acupuncture Clinic and Lexington and New Albany beginning in December 1998. He held a bachelor of science degree from Eastern Kentucky University with a major in public and police administration and a minor in music. He also held a master of science degree in urban management from the University of Cincinnati and a master of oriental medicine degree from the International Institute of Chinese Medicine in Santa Fe, N.M. His professional licenses included a doctor of acupuncture, an acupuncture diplomatic license from the National Commission for the Certification of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, a licensed acupuncturist in the state of Indiana and an amateur radio general class license. He played trombone in various bands, including the 7th Army Symphony in Stuttgart, Germany, the 158th Army Band in Fort Knox, Ky. and the 3rd Infantry Division Band in Wurzburg, Germany. He also played the trombone in Dixieland and orchestra bands in Madison and Louisville, Ky.
He is survived by his wife, Sarah Meadows; one daughter, Dr. Becky Lee Meadows of Carrollton, Ky.; one step son; one step daughter; his mother, Mary L. Meeks of Carrollton, Ky.; one brother, Ray P. Meadows of Worthville, Ky.; three grandchildren; and two step grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Larry Stephen Meadows Jr.
A private graveside service was be held.
