Thomson Francis Mason was the grandson of Virginia patriot George Mason. He was born at his grandfather's plantation, Gunston Hall in Fairfax County, Virginia, the second eldest child and eldest son of General Thomson Mason (1759–1820) and his wife Sarah McCarty Chichester, and was primarily raised at Hollin Hall, his father's plantation.
Thomson Mason graduated from Princeton with honors and went on to receive a degree in law from Princeton in 1807, then returned to Virginia where he began practicing law, eventually becoming involved in political activities. He was a prominent jurist, lawyer, planter, councilman, judge, and the mayor of Alexandria, District of Columbia (now Virginia) between 1827 and 1830.
His death record appeared in the December 22, 1838 issue of the "Alexandria Gazette."
