The marriage of Margaret Elmendorf and Sam Sloan took place in New Brunswick, NJ on April 8, 1844. It was her 22nd birthday. The couple made their first home on Clinton Street, Brooklyn, then to a house on Henry Street and three years later to 133 Joralemon Street, where they stayed for 21 years and where most of their children were born. Her mother and father came to live with them in their final years.
After the death of her husband, Margaret Sloan lived for six more years at their Garrison home. While she was lonely, she spent every day fulfulling her many interests. She continued to be an avid reader of good books. While Sam was alive they used to read to each other in the evenings. They both enjoyed biographies, especially of great Americans. She was in charities, such as the missionary work of the Reformed Church, the Minor Chapel and Wilson mission. She loved beautiful and rare things, particularly the rare jewelry given by her husband, much of which she was robbed of shortly after his death. She lived to the age of 91.
