Margaret was the daughter of Murdock Otis McKenzie and Jemima Chapman.
In May of 1778, Indians attacked their home at Walker's Creek, Giles County, Virginia. Several of her family members, including her mother, brother Henley, and sisters Sallie and Mary were killed by the Indians. Margaret and her sister Elizabeth were taken captive and held by the Indians for about 10 years.

Rescued by John Kinzie after she and her sister were kidnapped by Seneca Indians. They had a common law marriage and 3 children while they were in Detroit. When John Kinzie went west to become a fur trader she returned home to Virginia, She and their children later joined him in Wisconsin
