Titular Queen Consort of King Louis XVIII of France, who died prior to his official succession to the French throne in 1814. She was born Maria Giuseppina Luigia di Savoia, the third child and second daughter of the future king of Sardinia, Victor Amadeus III, and his wife, Infanta Maria Antonia Ferdinanda of Spain. Marie Joséphine was married on April 16, 1771 by proxy in the Kingdom of Sardinia, then again in person on May 14, 1771 at the Palace of Versailles to Louis Stanislas, Comte de Provence, the future King Louis XVIII, a grandson of King Louis XV of France and brother of King Louis XVI. The couple had no children.
She was originally interred in the Lady Chapel of Westminster Abbey, but her body was removed a year later on the orders of her husband and reburied in the Kingdom of Sardinia, in the Cattedrale di Santa Maria in Cagliari.
