GEORGE H. T. SHAW

George H. T. Shaw, internationally known civil engineer, passed away in New Orleans, La., Tuesday night, April 17, at the age of 64 years, 10 months and three days. Mr. Shaw had been in failing health for several months and a few days prior to his death had been removed to a New Orleans hospital where he submitted to an operation from which he failed to rally as other complications set in. His daughter, Mary Gwen, and brother, A. M. Shaw, were with him when the end came.

Mr. Shaw was born in Lee Center, July 14, 1869, the son of James Monroe and Rebecca Linn Shaw. He received his education in the Lee Center schools, Dixon College, Cornell College, Mt. Vernon, Iowa, and the University of Michigan, pursuing the course of civil engineering in which he afterward attained great success. He assisted in the survey for a railroad in Columbia, S. A. in 1893, and he and his family later spent many years in Mexico where he was engaged in projecting a railroad through the interior. He was president of the Northern Illinois Electric Railway company which failed to attain the success hoped for it, owing to the miscarriage of plans for capital to promote it.

He was also engaged actively in the real estate business at one time and promoted investments in Texas and Louisiana. For several years preceding his death, he was one of the engineers on the Lakes to the Gulf Waterway, being located at Morris and Joliet.

Mr. Shaw was united in marriage with Sarah Clark, October 5, 1899, and who preceded him in death nearly two years ago. To this union two children were born, Mary Gwendolen of Mankato, Minn., and Clarke M. of Fall River, Wis. These with two brothers, Sherman L. Shaw of Lee Center, Arthur M. Shaw of New Orleans, La., and one sister, Mrs. C. T. Leonard of Chicago, survive him.

Mr. Shaw possessed a magnetic personality and a cheerful, thoughtful disposition. He was never so happy as when doing a kind deed and his constant supply of good humor and entertaining anecdotes made him a favorite wherever he went. His memory is a rich heritage to his family and friends.
