Barbara L. Turnpenny
formerly of Vestal
Barbara L. Turnpenny, 79, died Thursday, October 15, 2009, at the James G. Johnston Nursing Home. She was predeceased by her husband, William F. Turnpenny; her son, John Turnpenny; and sister, Alma Reid. She is survived by her daughter, Joanne Turnpenny, Newfield, NY; son, Mark Turnpenny and fiancee, Darlene Benson, Clinton, NY; sisters and brother-in-law, Lorna Everitt, Brackney, PA, Melinda and Dave Ingalls, Salisbury, MD; brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Joan Goodrich, Johnson City; grandchildren, Benjamin Turnpenny, Buffalo, Meghan Turnpenny, Oneida; and also several nieces and nephews. In her quiet and modest way, Barbara gave sustained and faithful leadership to her church, clubs and family. A member of the Woman's Club of Endicott for 35 years, she held many board positions, including recording and corresponding secretary, vice president, director, chair of communications and budget committees, president, Federations' Broome County chairperson, education chair on the NYS Federation of Women's Clubs. She was a longtime member of the Vestal United Methodist Church. She held leadership positions at local, district and conference levels of UMW. She enjoyed her participation in Methodist School of Missions. She enjoyed cross-stitching and traveling to other countries.
Funeral Services will be held Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at the Vestal United Methodist Church, 328 Main Street, Vestal with her Pastor, Rev. Michael Willis, officiating. Burial will be in Floral Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Barber Memorial Home, Inc., 428 Main Street, Johnson City on Monday from 4-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Vestal United Methodist Church. The family would like to thank the staff of the Star Unit at the James G. Johnston Nursing Home for their care and support.
