Charles I. Martin, 94, of Richmond, died peacefully Jan. 11, 2013, surrounded by family.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Gwendolyn Hudson, and son Douglas T. Martin. He was the youngest and last surviving child of Lucius and Berta Martin of Halifax County.

Mr. Martin is survived by his children, Nancy Martin Hoopes (Jack) of Lake Lure, N.C., Billy G. Martin, Charles B. Martin Sr. (Betty Dale), all of Sandston; grandchildren Nikki Annen, Greg Martin, Christie Martin, Charlie Martin, Jason Martin, Jennifer Martin Payne, Shane Wooten, Kelly Ramsey, Sandra Martin Pedersen and Robert Martin; step-grandchildren John Hoopes, Molly Hoopes and Duncan Hoopes; and 24 great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII and a tobacco farmer in Halifax County before moving to Richmond. He then worked at Liggett and Myers until retirement.

He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family. He will always be remembered for his kind, gentle and loving manner.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave. Richmond, where a funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2013, at 2 p.m. Interment will follow in Washington Memorial Park.

The family thanks the nurses and staff of Sitter and Barfoot Veterans Care Center for their skill and loving care.
