Sir Gilbert de la Hay was the 3rd Feudal Baron of Errol in Gowrie; Co-Regent of Scotland in 1255 during the minority of King Alexander III of Scotland, and Sheriff of Perth in 1262.

Sir Gilbert was the son of David de la Hay and Helen de Strathern. As part of his marriage dower of Idonea Comyn he received Upper Coull, Aberdeenshire.

Sir Gilbert married Lady Idonea Comyn, daughter of William Comyn, jure uxoris Earl of Buchan and Marjory, Countess of Buchan, a daughter of the mighty Earl of Buchan, the beginning of a close connection with north east Scotland which endures to this day.

The Hays of Errol's Seat was Errol Manor in Errol Park and Carse of Gowrie which they held from the 10th century.
