Janet was born Bertha Eglington Agnes Russell. When she was 2 years old her mother died soon after giving birth to her 10th child (who also died soon thereafter). After the mother's death, her father put the youngest 3 children (with Bertha/Janet being the youngest) up for adoption. Janet was adopted by Emily Leslie Charles (1876-?) who changed her name. We don't know where her middle name Ewing came from but her family thought it was the surname of her birth parents. Janet tried to research her bio-parents but was unsuccessful. Unknown to her, her bio-family also tried in vain to find her. Now, thanks to computers and DNA testing, the connection has been made and the family reunited. Partially due to the youngest 3 being put up for adoption, my grandma (Janet's sister) left the family when she was 11 and moved to the west coast and was also raised by a spinster.

With no disrespect to her adoptive mother, I have connected Janet to her bio-parents, mainly due to not knowing where her adoptive mother is buried. If anyone has any issues with this or anything I have written please feel free to contact me.
