Mather Cleveland Jr.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Mather Cleveland Jr., 74, a former area resident, died June 25.

Cleveland was bom in New York City, the son of Mather and Susan E. (Colgate) Cleveland.

He graduated from Phillips Andover in 1940, attended Yale University and Washburn College in Topeka, Kan., and graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1956 .He lived in New London from 1944 to 1955, in Durham from 1955 to 1956, and in Woodsville from 1956 to 1958. He moved to Boston in 1958 and lived there until 1992, when he moved to Nashville, Tenn.

Cleveland played squash in his younger years and was an avid reader.

Members of his family surviving include a daughter, Winifred Cleveland Sherman of Nashville, Tenn.; two grandsons; two sisters, Mary Sholty and Patience Cleveland, both of Los Angeles, Calif.; nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was predeceased by his wife, Marilouise (Fisher) Cleveland, [who] died in 1968.

Graveside services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in Old Main Street Cemetery, New London. The Rev. Robert W. Thurston pastor of the First Baptist Church of New London will officiate.
