Publisher, born in Lebanon, Connecticut, 30 March, 1829. He was educated at Brown, in 1850 married Miss Ellsworth, granddaughter of Chief-Justice Oliver Ellsworth, studied law, and for nearly twenty years practiced in Lafayette, lndiana. Mr. Smith came in 1870 to New York City, where, in connection with Dr. Josiah G. Holland and Charles Scribner, he established " Scribner's Monthly" (now the "Century Magazine"). In 1873 he began the publication of " St. Nicholas," a magazine for children. The first organization was under the firm-name of Scribner and Co., which subsequently became the Century company, with Mr. Smith as president. Under his direction these magazines have enjoyed great popularity and an extensive circulation on both sides of the Atlantic.
