Calvin Harsin, a long time Blunt resident, passed away at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD on September 5, 2015 after a long battle with COPD and all of its complications. Visitation will be Friday, September 11, 2015 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Feigum Funeral Home with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Service will be Saturday, September 12, 2015 at the Blunt School Gym with burial at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Blunt.
Calvin Harsin was born on April 22, 1933 to Henry and Myrtle (Gruenewald) Harsin. He attended Blunt Schools. Cal married Karen (Walker) and had four wonderful, thoughtful daughters: Nadine, Vicki (Cliff) Schieckoff, Bonni (Paul) Warriner and Kami (Rusty) Leih, all living in South Dakota. His family was the light of his life! He loved them very much.
Cal served in the Korean Conflict from 1953 – 1955. He also served in Germany as a radio operator and plane spotter. After his Army service he went to work at the Oahe Dam and then on the Gregory, SD as a Ford tractor repair man. In 1959, Calvin and his family operated the Chuck wagon Café and gas station in Blunt, SD with Cal's parents. In 1968 he took a position in the Blunt School as the one and only custodian – doing all the duties from the boiler to the cleaning of the buildings. He retired 32 years later. He always was a "do it yourself kind of guy". He either made things work or he built something to make it work. He could fix anything (almost).
He was an active member of the American Legion and the Custodian Engineers Association of South Dakota.
Cal is survived by his wife Karen, his four beautiful daughters: Nadine, Vicki, Bonni and Kami; loving brothers Cecil (Linda), Burke and Charles (Cookie), Ogden, UT; and his sister Marjorie, Honeyville, UT; nine grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his mother and father in-law and great grandson Cooper.
