Karen K. Harsin, 78, of Pierre, formerly of Blunt, passed away July 11, 2017 in Pierre. Visitation will be held 5:00-7:00pm, Sunday, July 16, 2017 at Feigum Funeral Home, concluding with a Prayer Service at 7:00pm. Funeral Services will begin at 10:00am, Monday, July 17, 2017 at the Blunt School Gymnasium with interment following at Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
Karen Kay (Walker) Harsin was born on June 18, 1939 to Willard and Helen (Janssen) Walker. She spent most of her life in Blunt and proudly graduated as a Blunt Monarch.
Karen married Cal and along came four daughters: Nadine, Vicki (Cliff) Schieckoff, Bonni (Paul) Warriner and Kami (Rusty) Leih - all living in South Dakota. Her family was the light of her life. She adored them very much.
Karen enjoyed working with people from a very young age. She loved babysitting and waitressing in numerous cafes. In 1959 Cal and Karen operated the Chuck Wagon Café and gas station in Blunt with Cal’s parents. Cal took the custodial position at the Blunt School in 1968. Karen helped until she was hired as a teacher’s aid and later a substitute teacher. After 30+ years with Sully Buttes, Karen began working at Oahe, Inc in Pierre. Ending her career with Oahe Electric Coop in Blunt. Karen cherished each friendship she made and her time on Earth.
Karen was active in her community. She enjoyed many years of coordinating the Custodian Engineers Association. Karen and Cal took great pleasure in their annual workshops with their friends. Karen spent many years on the Blunt city council because she enjoyed making her home town a better place. Mom loved helping at the Cemetery and at the Senior Center. Karen’s friendly and kind personality brought her many life-long friends. She was rich with people who loved her and will be greatly missed.
Karen had a long rewarding life, but it was not always easy. She fought a courageous battle with cancer and won. Loosing Cal was the hardest thing of all. She struggled with his loss, but turned it into a positive; when she went to live at Edgewood. She loved interacting with her new found friends. Karen enjoyed visiting with everyone and adored Bingo. Eventually she was able to move home again, where she was surrounded by her loving family.
Mom went to sleep in her loving home on July 10th and awoke in heaven with Dad on July 11th. They have been reunited! No need for oxygen and no more worries.
