Maye (Dutch) Horne Dodson, 86, formerly of Olney, Maryland, passed away Sunday at the Carrington Place nursing facility in Rural Retreat. The daughter of the late Marvin Isaac and Edith Ryan Horne, she was born at home in the Dry Road section of Wythe County on March 17, 1931. Also preceding her in death was her husband of 36 years, Kenneth Dodson in Maryland, and sisters Margaret Horne Thomas, Josie Horne and infant Helen Horne, all of Dry Road.

After her husband's passing, she moved back to Wytheville to rejoin family and friends and had several good years before health issues caused her to take up residence at Carrington Place. While living in Maryland, she and her husband reared their only child and worked and sacrificed to send her to veterinary school. They were very proud of their daughter's accomplishments. Maye also managed to show her entrepreneurial talents by taking part in three businesses over the years. She was extremely loving to animals, not only to her dogs but to all animals. Seeing an animal being abused was certain to get her fired up. And it happened many times in her life.

Surviving her is her daughter Dr. Deborah Dodson Craft and husband Dr. Ray Craft of Olney, Maryland; granddaughters Allison Craft of, Scotland, and Dana Craft of Melbourne, Australia; sisters Maude Cox and Betty McDonald, both of Wytheville; brother and wife Marty and Frieda Horne of Roanoke. Also surviving are many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Barnett's Funeral Home with Dr. Doug Hyndrich officiating. Burial will be at West End Cemetery, Wytheville. A gathering of family and friends will be held one hour before the services.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to any organization that cares for the welfare of animals. It would make Maye very happy.
