Edith Faye Yates Compton, age 94, of Pounding Mill, Virginia, formerly of Grundy, Virginia, passed away Thursday, March 17, 2016 in a Claypool Hill, Virginia nursing home following a lengthy illness.

She was born in Grundy, Virginia and was the daughter of the late Lawrence and Bertha Smith Yates.

She was a retired teacher from the Buchanan County School System. She started teaching in the fall of 1955 at Britt Day School (a one room school house). She rode the school bus to Wimmer Gap and walked 1 ˝ miles to the school where she had to build the fire and carry the water from a neighbor for her students to drink. In 1959, she started teaching at Whitewood Elementary School where she continued to work until her retirement in July of 1985, thus making her a 29 year employee of the system. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, knitting, making flower arrangements, and home decorating. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Phyllis Ann Lester; sister, Gusta Rife; and one brother, Otis Yates.

Great Grandchildren: Sierra Spalding, Gabe Marzolf, Courtney Lester, Ryan Lester, and Ashton Lester

Funeral services for Edith Faye Yates Compton will be conducted Sunday, March 20, 2016 at 12pm at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, Virginia with the Rev. Danny Hess officiating. Entombment will follow at Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill, Virginia. Grandsons and nephews will serve as pallbearers. Friends may call from 11am until 12pm Sunday prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation.
