Marliene Ruth Compton,age 76, of Abingdon, VA, formerly of Richlands, VA, took her first breath in heaven in the early morning hours of September 1st at Bristol Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.
Born on January 12, 1947 in Whitewood, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late John Lawrence Bucklen and Thelma Kathleen 'Faye' Cole Bucklen.
She was a 1965 graduate of Whitewood High School, where she served as class president. After graduating high school,she attended Clinch Valley Nursing School, where she took part in the Licensed Practical Nurse program. She then continued her education at the Appalachian School of Nursing at Southwest Virginia Community College, where she graduated from the Registered Nursing Program in 1985. She gave over fifty years of her life to the medical field, helping those that needed it the most. She was a a nurse at the Mattie Williams Hospital in Richlands, VA, and then worked for over thirty years with Dr. James McVey, first at his office in the basement of Mattie Williams Hospital and then at Washington Square Clinic in Richlands. She also worked with hospice and home health, sitting with critical care infants. Her final place of employment was Bristol Regional Medical Center, where she worked for eight years before retiring in 2013. The impact she made on the community during her time as a nurse is immeasurable, as people still talk about what an amazing nurse she was.
Marliene was a loving, compassionate, and kind mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Known as 'Itchy' to her grandchildren and many others, she loved nothing more than spending time with her family. She was so loved by so many and will be missed by all those that had the privilege and honor of knowing her.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Betty Carol Bucklen, and two nephews, Johnny Ervin Mullins, and Jimmy Dewayne Mullins.
She is survived by her two children, son, Mike Compton and wife LeTonya of Pounding Mill, VA, her daughter Elisha Elledge of Abingdon, VA, four grandchildren: Jessica Ann Compton Dinger and husband Jesse of Pounding Mill, VA, Joshua Compton of Pounding Mill, VA, Sarah Compton of Pounding Mill, and Cain Elledge of Abingdon, VA, as well as one great grandchild, Levi Stone, of Pounding Mill, VA, and her sister, Wanda Hicks, of Cedar Bluff,VA.
A visitation service will be held from 6-8 pm on Wednesday, September 6, 2023 at Singleton's Funeral Service. A funeral service for Marliene Compton will be conducted at 1pm on Thursday, September 7, 2023 at Singleton Funeral Service in Cedar Bluff, VA, with Minister Keith Hovis and Pastor Rick Blevins officiating, with burial services to follow at Greenhills Memory Garden in Claypool Hill. Pallbearers will be Josh Compton, Jesse Dinger, Jimmy McVey, Brandon Blankenship, James Cochran, and Garnett Lester.
