Father of Herman Melville author of Moby Dick. Merchant, im-ported cloth and clothing and sold it in Albany and New York City. Grandfather (General Peter Gansevoort, hero of Fort Stan-wix in the American Revolution.) and grandmother are buried at Albany Rural. Father, mother, brother and 4 sisters of Herman Melville are buried on this lot.

Note that Allan Melvill, during his lifetime, did not spell his name with a final 'e'; the e was added to the family name by his widow, Maria, shortly after his death and adopted by Herman and siblings as well.
