JACK PROUT FROM EARLIER STORES CAREER, CALLED

John (Jack) Prout, long time resident and former well known businessman of this city, died today at 5:25 a.m. at the Nevada County Hospital at the age of 75.

He was a native of England, coming to the United States at the age of 13, settling with his family in Michigan. He had been a resident of Grass Valley for the past 30 years.

During his early residency here he worked as a miner. He spent several years as an employee of the former Jensen and Thomas Furniture Store on South Auburn street, before entering the local business field independently. Prout operated a cigar store on Mill street, now operated as Joe's Place. He and his wife later operated a confectionery store in the in the Jensen and Thomas Building on South Auburn street for several years.

Prout was a member of the Mine Workers Protective League. He was the husband of Gladys Prout, Grass Valley; father of Roy Toms, Colfax, Mrs. Mavis Alderman, Nevada City; Mrs. Evalyn Lasick, Grass Valley; and brother of Mrs. Evelina Richards, England. Also bereaved are seven grand children and several nieces and nephews.

The body has been taken in charge by Hooper-Weaver Mortuary. Funeral arrangements have not been completed.
