Her 1863 Vermont birth record lists her as Emma, as do the 1870 and 1880 U.S. Census returns and the 1915 and 1925 New York State Census returns. The 1900 U.S. Census has her as Elga, as does her father's 1915 obituary. The name Elga is written on the back of the frame of the ca. 1867 oil portrait done of her by the artist Benjamin Franklin Mason.
I find no census record for Emma in either the 1910 or 1920 U.S. census returns. In the 1915 New York State census, she is living in Central Valley and is listed as a patient, apparently as others under the care of Dr. Carlos MacDonald, a psychiatrist. Dr. MacDonald purchased the private facility, Falkirk Sanatarium, in Central Valley, Orange County, New York in 1906 and operated it until his death in 1926.
In the 1925 census Emma is living in Beacon, New York, a patient at the Craig House Sanitarium. Identity is confirmed by the fact that the census form asks where the patient was a resident of at their time of admission. That question was answered "Middlebury, Vt."
Craig House was an historic, 64-acre estate and the first licensed private psychiatric hospital in the United States. Craig House operated from 1919 to 1950, and was noted as a countryside retreat for famous and celebrity patients. Operating as a discreet psychiatric sanitarium. It was highly regarded in its prime for its natural environment, talk therapy, and luxurious amenities.
