Joined by his brother Robert in a campaign in Ireland in 1317. Robert's younger brother. Took part in the Ayrshire campaign in 1307. Subdued Galloway in 1308. Reduced Dundee in 1313. Besieged Stirling Castle and granted the governor a year's truce in June 1313. Commanded the right wing at Bannockburn. Recognised as heir presumptive May 1315. Accepted an invitation from the Ulster chieftains. Took Carrickfergus and was crowned King of Ireland in 1315. Opposed by the clergy. Being joined by his brother Robert they pushed on to Limerick, but when left alone fell back on Carrickfergus. Killed in battle at Dundalk. (The concise dictionary of National biography.
