MAJ. WILLIAM TILLMAN, 84 YEARS OLD, DIES HERE
Former Paymaster in U. S. Army Was Once Prominent Louisville Banker
Maj. William Tillman, 84 years old, died Saturday night after an illness of but a few days at his apartment, 943 South Fourth Street. Maj. Tillman was born in Geneva, NY on September 20, 1834. He came to Louisville about forty-five years ago and a score of years ago was a prominent banker of this city. Prior to his coming here Maj. Tillman was a paymaster in the United States army at the outbreak of the War between the States. He married Miss Mary Steele, who came from a prominent Louisville family. Maj. Tillman was the brother-in-law of the late Charles H. Petit, who was the head of the Robinson-Petit Company, and the late Col. Sanford C. Kellogg, who was in the United States army. Maj. Tillman is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Clifford T. Woodrow, of Cincinnati; Mrs. William Kahnweller, of Montclair, NJ; Mrs. John Matthews, of Larchmont, NY and Mrs. Horace B. Wilson, of Dallas, TX. Mrs. Woodrow arrived in this city yesterday and the other daughters are expected to arrive to-day. Funeral arrangements will be made upon their arrival.
