He prepared for college at Middlebury High School and The Gunnery School. He attended Middlebury College from 1907 to 1910 in the Class of 1911. He was a student of Harvard School of Physical Training. He was the athletic director and instructor in French at the Gunnery School in Washington, Connecticut. From 1910 to 1912 he was with Eastern Manufacturing Company, He was in Chicago from 1918 to 1923 where he was a sales manager. In 1923 he returned to Middlebury, where from 1923 to 1934 he was in the hardware business.
