Entered U.S. service May 25, 1861, as private, Co. F, 2nd Michigan Volunteer Infantry. He rose in rank to corporal and sergeant; was wounded in his hand in engagement at Williamsburg, Va., May 5, 1862. Discharged August 6, 1862, to reenlist as Captain Co. K, 23 Mich.
