Served two years in the Civil War, was in Company F, 17th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers, discharged in 1863. Re-enlisted in Company D., 1st Massachusetts Cavalry, served till the close of the war. Was a detective and resided in Homestead, Pennsylvania (Severance, B. Frank. Genealogy and biography of the descendants of Walter Stewart of Scotland and of John Stewart who came to America in 1718 and settled in Londonderry, N.H. Greenfield, Mass. : T. Morey & Son, 1905, pg. 69, 140).
Occupation: Detective.
His 1877 marriage certificate to Minnie Morris states his mother's maiden surname as "Abbott."
Severance lists two wives: Adaline Marden and Mary Sweeney, the later of Homestead, Pennsylvania. I find no roecrd of Charles marrying a Mary Sweeney, but note that Minnie Morris (their marriage license lists her as the daughter of John Hughes and Sarah Morris) was from Pennsylvania, so Severance may have had the name incorrect. It is also possible "Minnie" is a nickname. Also, the 1900 census shows Charles living with Gertrude and numerous children. The eldest of these is a daughter, Emma. In 1904 Emma marries Charles A. Delahanty. Their marriage certificate states that Emma was born in Homestaed, Pa. I find no death or burial record for Charles second wife, Grace, nor his third, Minnie. However, the findagrave for his daughter Emma links to her mother, Mary (Sweeney) Stewart.
