A surgeon in the U.S. Army. Under the belief that a large estate awaited the Stewart heirs in this country, he went to England and made a study of the family (Severance, B. Frank. Genealogy and biography of the descendants of Walter Stewart of Scotland and of John Stewart who came to America in 1718 and settled in Londonderry, N.H. Greenfield, Mass. : T. Morey & Son, 1905, pg. 96).

Joseph D. Stewart: Age, 52 years. Enrolled June 5th, 1863 at Falmouth, Va. Mustered in as an assistant surgeon June 5th, 1863 for a three-year tour of duty. Wounded in action July 2nd, 1863 at Gettysburg, PA. Mustered out August 3rd, 1864. Prior service as assistant surgeon 31st Infantry.
