As a battery commander, he distinguished himself in the Fredericksburg Campaign, Battle of Gettysburg and Chancellorsville. Lieutenant David Hunter Kinzie was a West Point graduate. He served in the Civil War Battery K, 5th U.S. Artillery, Army of the Potomoc and was present in the Battle of Gettysburg. He was a captain in the Second Infantry and was stationed at the Presidio, San Francisco, California. In 1900 he was Lieutenant Colonel, stationed at Jefferson Barracks in New Orleans, Louisiana.
