US Army Brigadier General. At the start of the Civil War, he enlisted in the Union Army as a 1st Lieutenant in the 5th Artillery Corps. Lieutenant David Hunter Kinzie was a West Point graduate. He served in the Civil War Battery K, 5th U.S. Artillery, Army of the Potomoc and was present in the Battle of Gettysburg. He was a captain in the Second Infantry and was stationed at the Presidio, San Francisco, California. In 1900 he was Lieutenant Colonel, stationed at Jefferson Barracks in New Orleans, Louisiana. His rank at retirement was Brigadier General. He married Mrs. Elvenah Crosby Kinzie nee Janes, the widow of his cousin John Harris Kinzie (ancestry.com message board on David Hunter Kinzie).
