Nicholas was the son of Gilbert de la Hay.
Nicholas was killed in the Battle of Dupplin Moor. [Historic Environment Scotland has identified a site on Gaskmoor, which it suggests corresponds with the accounts in the chronicles. This is on the Dupplin plateau, south-east of Dupplin Loch, and 5 miles (8 km) south-west of Perth.]
