The Bisset(t)s were a Norman family who followed William into England in 1066. They were of high noblility and at least one branch of the family was invited to take up land in Scotland in return for helping William the Lyon to retain his crown. One of these family members was a Sir Walter BISSET(T) Lord of Aboyne who fell into disfavour when he was reportedly responsible for the death of his brother in law the young Earl of Athol. For this terrible deed he was exiled from Scotland. The Bisset(t)s married into several Scottish families FRASER, GRANT, GORDON, ROSE and Alan of Galloway's daughter married Sir Walter BISSET(T). Ian Mor McDonald (The Tanist) was married to a BISSET(T) from the vales of Antrim and their descendants are now McDonnell, Lord of Antrim. The Antrim BISSET(T)s were descended from Sir Walter BISSET(T)'s nephew who was also exiled from Scotland for his supposed part in the death of the Earl of Athol. This is only a brief understanding of the BISSET(T) families. Current research is being carried out to link the English families to the Scottish families carrying the name BISSET(T). It is thought the first BISSET(T) to enter Scotland was Henricus BISSETT an English noble in about 1200. (ElectricScotland.com)
