Herman Bartels, 88, died Friday evening, Dec. 18, 2009 at Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home in Viborg following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services were held at First Baptist Church in Chancellor on Tuesday, Dec. 22 at 10:30 a.m., officiated by Rev. Jeff Poppinga and Rev. Dennis Hansen.

Pallbearers were Curt Bartels, Kerwin Neeman, Dennis Buseman, Loren Harms, Lowell Bartels, and Scott Sittig.

Interment was in the Chancellor Baptist Cemetery.

Herman G. Bartels was born on a farm northeast of Davis, SD, on Dec. 25, 1920, the son of Henry and Tillie
(Poppinga) Bartels. He attended Middleton rural school, District #24 and grew to manhood there.

He was united in marriage to Lucille Ainsworth in 1943. One daughter, Phyllis, was born to this union.

Lucille died on Dec. 24, 1945.

On Sept. 28, 1950 he was united in marriage to Leola Hofer. Herman farmed northeast of Chancellor until 1961 when they moved to their farm southeast of Davis where they had since lived.

Herman was an active and faithful member of First Baptist Church in Chancellor.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lucille; his father, Henry, on June 7, 1975; his mother, Tillie, on
Sept. 19, 1987, one brother, Gerbert Bartels on Aug. 30, 2008; two brothers-in-law: Henry Buseman and Cecil
Neeman.
