Henry B. Copenhaver, 86, Syracuse, retired farmer died Sunday evening, July 4, in Community Memorial Hospital. He had been ill just one week.
Son of Mr. & Mrs. Norman Copenhaver, he was born Oct. 21, 1878, at Marion, Va. When he was 19 he came to Syracuse and spent most of the remainder of his life in this community.
He returned to Virginia to marry Mary Wolfe at Marion in December 1910. Mrs. Copenhaver died in April 1928.
An exceedingly friendly man, Henry was something of an athlete in his younger years. He played baseball on the town team level when this was the sport of the nation. Later he turned to golf and was a charter member of the Syracuse Country Club.
Surviving are sons, Burton of Syracuse and William of Chilhowie, Va.; daughter, Mrs. Frances Jamison of New Berlin, Wisc.; sisters, Mrs. Ora Fox of Oakesdale, Wash.; and Mrs Ollie Meek of Marion, Va.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. An infant son also preceded him.
He was a member of the Methodist Church and Mr. Moriah Lodge, A.F. & A.M. in Syracuse.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 7 at the Tonsing & Son Funeral Home with Rev. Fred Loder officiating. Masonic rites were conducted at the grave.
Burial was in Warner cemetery northeast of Syracuse. Pallbearers were Graydon Liesemeyer, Elmer Neeman, John Freudenberg, Albert Witt, Irving Stubbendick, and Ernest Keim (findagrave.com)
