Charles Clayton Compton, 89, of Richlands, died May 25 at Tazewell following an extended illness. Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late William Whitten Compton and Gertrude Brown Compton. He had served for over three years in the Army Air Corps during World War II on the China, Burma and India Front. He was retired from S & S Corporation. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Hazel Ball Compton; four brothers: Porter, Lawrence, Patton and Warner Compton; and six sisters, Cornelia Compton, Eunice Compton Bucklen, Ernestine Compton Mullins, Nancy Compton, Ruby Compton Holcomb and Olive Compton White. Survivors: daughter, Judith Ann Clayton of Roanoke; brother, Calvin C. Compton of Roanoke; and several nieces and nephews. Graveside service were conducted at 2 p.m. May 27 at the Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill with Rev. Stafford Compton officiating. Singleton Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
