John Walter was the son of Norman Edward and Virgie(McNeal)Clifton. John Walter was the husband of Ruby Myers. John Walter and Ruby have two daughters--Elizabeth Marie Clifton and Mary Caroline Clifton and one son--John Walter Clifton II. John Walter has two sisters--Daris Marie Clifton and Judy Elaine Clifton and one brother--Kyle Edward Clifton--two grandchildren--Elizabeth Ann Clifton and John Walter Clifton III.

Abingdon, VA - John Walter Clifton, 62, of 146 Crest View Drive in Abingdon, died Thursday, February 14, 2002 at his home.

He was born in Whitewood, VA, and was a son of the late Norman Edward Clifton and Virgie McNeal Clifton, both Whitewood natives.

He was a 1957 graduate of Whitewood High School Whitewood Va and was an entrepreneur in the coal industry his entire life. He had resided in the Bristol Va and Abingdon Va area the past 20 years and was a member of the Richlands Masonic Lodge No. 318 A.F. & A.M. Richlands Va.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Elizabeth Marie Clifton.

His survivors include one daughter, Ms. Mary Caroline Clifton of Manhattan, NY, one son, John Walter Clifton II and his wife Lisa, of Richlands, his fiancée, Mrs. Janet Woolwine of Abingdon, two sisters, Ms. Daris Clifton of Alexandria, VA and Ms. Judy Taylor of Richlands, one brother, Kyle Clifton of Falls Church, VA, two grandchildren, Elizabeth Anne Clifton and John Walter Clifton III, several nieces, nephews, and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 2 PM at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Dr. Ted Nicholas officiating. Entombment will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill, VA.

Pallbearers will be Jason Clifton, Greg Clifton, Scott Clifton, Charles Carter, Charlie Woolwine, and Allen Skeens.
