Matthias came with his parents, Peter and Sally Hubbell, as a young boy to the wilderness of Schoharie County where he married 3 times and had at least eight children.
When he died in 1876 he was buried in the old Gilboa Cemetery.
In 1920, the village of Gilboa and it's cemetery were razed for the construction of the Schoharie reservoir; his grandson C.B. Hubbell, a local undertaker, removed the Hubbell graves from the cemetery to reinter them in Jefferson, NY., well above the water line of the new reservoir (findagrave.com)
