A grand-daughter of General Ethan Allen (Severance, B. Frank. Genealogy and biography of the descendants of Walter Stewart of Scotland and of John Stewart who came to America in 1718 and settled in Londonderry, N.H. Greenfield, Mass. : T. Morey & Son, 1905, pg. 69, 119).

Her biological parents were Joseph Sullivant and Jeanette Allen. This marriage ended in divorce. To keep up appearances of respectability, Jeanette told no one of the marriage, child born to them, or the divorce. Rosalthe became deaf when she was 2 or 3 due to a childhood illness and placed in a special school for deaf children. She was admitted to the deaf school in Lithopolis, Fairfield County, Ohio in 1851 when she was 11 years old and resided there for 3 years. Consequently she did not have much contact, if any with her biological mother. Rosalthe was adopted by Thomas and Eloise Riddle and took their surname.

Rosalthe married John D. H. Stewart on 23 November 1865 in Darien, Genesee, New York (findagrave)
