Dapifer of Dol in Brittany (letter from Philip B. Stewart, 6 Sabal Ct., Sewall's Pt., Stuart, Fl., 4/24/1990). A Breton noble living about 1045 and also herditary Steward of Dol. The family also appears to have been connected with the Counts of Dol and Dinan who were a branch of the ancient ruling dynasty of Brittany. Since Brittany was colonised from Britain, it seems probable that their original ancestors were Ancient Britons of high rank, and so it is especially interesting that the first monarchs of united Great Britain should have been the chiefs of the Stewart clan (Moncriffe, Iain. The highland clans. NY : CN Potter, c1982, revised ed., pg. 222).
