He was the son of Paul Theodore Bliss Ward and Helen Ashton. He graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1933, having first graduated from Amherst College. After his graduation from Harvard Medical School, he did his residency at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and practiced medicine in Medford, Massachusetts for eight years. He became board certified in Internal Medicine in 1949 and was a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1942 and was stationed at Great Lakes Naval Training Center; he was discharged in 1946. He had a medical practice from 1946 to 1998 in Lake Bluff, Illinois and was the founder and director of the Westmoreland Nursing Center at the Lake Forest Hospital in Lake Forest, Illinois from 1975 to 1998.
