Verres Nicholas Smith's first wife: "a lovely woman, was a Miss Pope, of Louisville, Ky. She had money and a plantation when he married her. There were two children born of this marriage, both of whom, with their sweet mother, now slumber in Mount Muncie cemetery. Captain Smith was an affectionate husband, and well nigh worshipped his children. He could be seen of any pleasant day rolling upon the lawn and gamboling with the pretty babes. When they died he acted like a mad man, cursed fate and God, and absolutely blasphemed." ("Verres Nicholas Smith," The Leavenworth Times, Leavenworth, Kansas, 28 Mar 1886, p. 5, cols. 4-5.)

Lucinda S. Pope and V. Nicholas Smith were married on 29 January 1863 in Jefferson County, Kentucky.
